...I nearly woke up the whole household. I've NEVER written that much before...and I'm still going!
The air was tense as she worked her way up again. According to the blueprints, she was on floor twenty one and the vent panned down a long way. Azureblade slowly moved forward, constantly monitoring her surroundings but something deep down within her very being reared its head for attention. Something didn’t feel right and she stopped, running scans for any laser trip wires and the like but all her results came out negative. She stalled for a moment, unconvinced and finally pushed herself to move forward very carefully. The stillness only seeked to gnaw at her circuits when the vent groaned loudly. Azureblade glared at the surrounding panels flanking her.
“Did you hear that?”
“Something’s in the vent…”
Azureblade faltered and stared down at the source of the voices. She couldn’t see them but she knew they were there.
“Maybe it’s a petro rat.”
“Heheh…let’s shoot it.”
Azureblade stared in mute horror as she heard the distinctive sound of weapons being primed. Oh frag, she realised when plasma shots speared the vent randomly. White beams of light ripped through the darkness of the vent as more shots fired rapidly through the metal towards her.
I humbly thank that marvelous scene from Half Life 1: Level: Surface Tension for the inspirational idea!
